YORK RITE DEGREES & ORDERS
by Sam Tish, E.H.P.
Much of the information about York Rite Freemasonry seems to be quietly discussed. Details about our York Rite bodies tend to be the "big secret" in masonry. Masonic brothers in Blue Lodge know York Rite exists, but little basic information reaches those who might be interested.
Total cost for candidates to join the three bodies (CHAPTER, COUNCIL, and COMMANDERY) is: $180.
Annual dues are less than $65. Any one or all of the degrees/orders may be taken as a "fast class–usually 2 days" or slow class stretched out over 2 or more months.
Payments may be made in three increments: CHAPTER = $85; COUNCIL = $40; COMMANDERY = $55.
The MARK MASTER degree follows the Blue Lodge Master Mason (3rd) degree. You should remember that degrees in YORK RITE are NOT numbered as are the SCOTTISH RITE degrees (4th thru 32nd).

b. CRYPTIC COUNCIL DEGREES (3): Royal Master; Select Master; and Super Excellent Master. [The Super Excellent Master degree is an optional degree and is not regularly offered; but it is recommended].![]()
c. CHIVALRIC COMMANDERY KNIGHTS TEMPLAR -- 3 ORDERS: Illustrious Order of the Red Cross; The Order of Malta; and The Order of the Temple.
Once a brother has been raised as a Master Mason in the Blue Lodge, there are a total of 7 degrees and 3 orders normally scheduled for candidates who petition to join YORK RITE.
